Interpersonal Therapy is the examination of the dynamics of two or more individuals. It considers the dynamics of two or more systems attempting to integrate differing styles of communication, interaction, problem-solving, values, expectations, and experiences and how these styles conflict and how they complement each other.

The therapist is assisting people in identifying the patterns of thoughts and behaviours that are helpful and those that are not helpful. This is done, in part, by encouraging people to be more empathetic of the others' experiences. The couple or family is assisted in identifying and communicating how they feel in particular situations.

The goal of therapy is always change. The goal to improve the well being of the others and to feel more connected to those that matter the most.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is one of the most researched methods of therapy to date. Francine Shapiro is recognized as the founder of this method of therapy. It is particularly effective in reducing and/or ameliorating trauma. Trauma that comes from exposure to sexual abuse, physical abuse, verbal abuse, emotional abuse and vicarious abuse. Vicarious abuse refers to the witnessing of abuse - not necessarily happening to you directly.

EMDR is a method that taps into the subconscious material of the individual - the material of experiences, thoughts, and feelings that become suppressed over the years of coping and functioning in an anti-emotional world. In the viewing and placing of events in the timeline of peoples' lives, these events lose significance as the more present experiences gain their rightful places in their world.

Narrative Therapy is a method of using well-placed, well-thought-out questions that will challenge the dominant story of people. The dominant story is the story of the person that was imposed upon them --- by culture, by the family, by the social network at large.

Through the use of questions, insight, and patterning of responses, the therapist invites the client into seeing an "alternative story". This alternative story is: who they can be, who they were meant to be, and who they want to be.

Narrative Therapy is a respectful method of therapy that sees the client as the expert in their own lives. The therapist's job is to help them discover this, and, at the same time, identify the roadblocks to the creation of the life they were meant to lead.
